Villa Frangipani

Hidden away in the traditional Balinese village of Pererenan, near Canggu, Villa Frangipani is set within a secret walled garden bordering the gentle Pangi River. This romantic four-bedroom retreat was designed and built by the group that built the Four Seasons Bali, and has the ambience of a cosy, intimate family home. It has been lovingly furnished with Indonesian antiques and is characterised by a shingle roof and pitched woven bamboo ceilings.

The main building houses three bedrooms with en-suite facilities, together with a living and dining area, study room and fully equipped kitchen. Located at the bottom of the garden is a separate self-contained guest pavilion featuring a bedroom, bathroom and a verandah, and there is also a swimming pool.

The entrance to the villa is via a stone walkway flanked by lotus ponds. Guests have the luxury of both indoor and outdoor living and dining areas. The indoor lounge features warm timber floors, cable TV with VCD/CD player, and the choice of ceiling fans or air-conditioning. A beautiful hand-carved Javanese marriage bed is strewn with cushions and serves as a comfortable double daybed where guests can relax with a book. The dining table seats eight. A full selection of movies, CDs, books and board games are also available.

Sliding glass doors open onto an open-air living area, sheltered by a roof. Ideal for entertaining, this poolside lounge is furnished with another dining table, daybed and coffee tables. The infinity-edge, freeform swimming pool is lined with green Java stone. Gnarled frangipani trees, after which the villa is named, drop their waxy flowers and mossy stone statues complete the picture.

The spacious air-conditioned master bedroom is entered by double antique doors; the room overlooks the pool and garden and is dominated by a four poster bed hung with diaphanous drapes. The en-suite dressing room features a built-in wardrobe with four ornately carved doors. A pretty open air bathroom is set within its own walled garden complete with Balinese statues, aquamarine terrazzo ‘his and hers’ washbasins, shower, toilet, and a canopied sunken bathtub. The master bedroom is also fitted with an overhead ceiling fan and a safe deposit box.

The two air-conditioned guest bedrooms are likewise very spacious, both feature twin beds, fitted wardrobes, and local artefacts. Large picture windows offer a view of the garden. A bathroom with a sunken bathtub, washbasin, shower and toilet is shared between the two bedrooms.

A small study room, located between the guest bedrooms and bathroom, is furnished with a desk, easy chair and bookshelves.

More local artefacts are attractively displayed around the property in little alcoves and corners. The fully equipped kitchen has a terracotta tiled floor and a rustic look that is in keeping with the style of the villa. Beyond the kitchen is a laundry with washing machine and dryer.

A natural stone pathway leads through the terraced garden to the self-contained, air-conditioned guest pavilion. This charming bungalow houses a bedroom with queen-size bed, and a bathroom with toilet, basin and private outdoor shower. There is also a fan, safe deposit box, cable TV, fridge and stereo. A verandah at the front is complemented by a lotus pond and stone statues. Adjacent to the river valley and rice fields, this is a great spot for bird watching; the beautiful iridescent blue Java Kingfisher with its distinctive red beak is a common sight.

The secluded lawn next to the guest pavilion can be set up with tables and chairs for a romantic dining experience. In a corner of the garden beside the river, there is a small lumbung (traditional rice barn), with a grass ‘alang alang’ roof. This is another great place for chilling out and also serves as a play house for the kids. The delightful gardens, created by the famous landscape architect Made Wijaya are planted with an abundance of flowering shrubs and are full of surprises such as a Moorish lamp nestling in the dwarf papyrus, or a shady sanctuary under a leafy canopy.

The peaceful village of Canggu is situated forty minutes from Bali’s International Airport and fifteen minutes from Nirwana Golf Course. Remarkably laidback and undeveloped, this out of town setting offers the double attraction of being relatively close to everything that guests might need, while also offering visitors a privileged insight into the traditions of rural Bali. The nearby beach is renowned for its panoramic coastline views and legendary sunsets. It has some world-class surf breaks but the currents are strong and swimming can be dangerous. The trendy Seminyak area, a mere twenty-five minutes drive away, offers a wide choice of international restaurants, chic cocktail bars, exciting nightclubs, lavish spas and elegant shops. Convenient for most of the island’s tourist attractions, the villa is also close to the famous Tanah Lot sea temple – one of the island’s most dramatic and venerated temples, perched offshore on a craggy wave-lashed rock.
